I wanted to answer one simple question. Is it just another AI girlfriend app, or does it do something special?
In this review, I’ll walk you through everything I found out. The free tier, the paid features, and what you actually get for your money.
Bottom line up front: Premium chat is surprisingly good, but many features feel overpriced and undercooked. More on that later in the review.
What’s the Free Tier Actually Like?
You can sign up and get 10 Neurons (the in-app currency) to start.
They also offer bonus Neurons. I got 200 more for linking my Discord and joining their Discord server.
On the free plan, you can:
- Browse all the characters and see their profiles.
- Check out photos and even some video clips.
- Start chatting with some characters (others are locked behind a level requirement).
I tried chatting with Sydney Longstreet. It was… rough. The conversation felt off. She ignored my questions and just seemed to babble pre-scripted lines.
I chatted for about 20 minutes without hitting a message limit, which is a plus, but the quality was so poor it wasn't fun.
The takeaway? The free tier feels like a demo. It proves the app works, but to get the real experience, you need to subscribe.

Frustrated with the free chat, I subscribed. There's only one premium plan, and it gets you the following:

One thing I quickly realized is that the subscription isn’t the full story.
The app runs on Neurons, which is their in-app currency. Even as a paying subscriber, many features still cost extra.
- Image generation: 50 neurons
- Video generation: 100 neurons
- Romantic chat message: 2 neurons
- Live call: 2,000 neurons per 5 minutes
You start with 10 Neurons when you sign up. You can also get 200 bonus Neurons if you link your Discord account and join their Discord server.
You’ll also receive daily Neurons, but only if you log in that day. Miss a day, and you miss the bonus.
Bottom line: The subscription unlocks the features. But Neurons control how often you can actually use them.
If you mostly chat, the costs stay manageable. If you start generating images, videos, or using voice calls regularly, the expenses can add up very quickly.
Chatting Experience
Once I subscribed, I switched to the "Saturn 5.2" AI model. And what a difference that was.
I roleplayed with Cali Caliente, and the chat was flirty, engaging, and became explicitly heated when I steered it that way. The responses were coherent and fun.
A heads-up: There are built-in boundaries. When I tried a specific non-consensual fantasy, the AI clearly stated it couldn't participate.
Creating a Custom Girlfriend
This is where Joi shines. The customization is detailed. You can design her appearance, personality, and your relationship dynamic.
I created a Middle Eastern police officer. The app even generated her profile picture in a police uniform, which showed impressive attention to detail.
It’s a strong feature, but you only get one free creation. Each additional custom character costs 1,000 Neurons.
Image Generation
Generating a custom image costs 50 Neurons (you must make 2 at a time).
There are built-in poses and styles you can use. First, I went with the photorealistic one.
The AI often ignored key parts of my prompt, and the results had an overly polished, "obviously AI" look.
Example: I tried to generate scenes where Sidney Longstreet is naked, but she still had clothes on.
I also tried anime-style images, and in my opinion, these turned out much better.
Important note: monthly free generations don’t apply to character-specific images.
Video Generation
Videos generate quickly, usually under 1 minute. The quality is good, but they share that same unnatural, polished look.
Also, movements can be jittery or unnatural.
And sometimes, the result is just completely off: In this video, I tried to generate a complex gangbang scene.
One important note: your monthly free generations don’t apply to character-specific videos.
Private Galleries
Each character has a gallery of photos/videos.
You can buy individual pieces (often 30-300 Neurons) or pay a one-time fee of 10,000 Neurons to unlock everything for one character.
For testing purposes, I unlocked one picture for 60 Neurons. But I didn’t feel it was worth it.
Live Video Calls
I spent 2,000 Neurons (about $15 worth) on a 5-minute call with Alexis Texas.
The video was laggy, lip-sync was off, and while she was visually ready for action, the experience was jittery and awkward.
You’re also charged the full 5-minute fee even if you hang up early. I ended mine after two minutes.
My honest opinion: It's far too expensive for the poor quality you get.
Who Is Joi Actually For?
You'll like it if:
- Your main priority is AI roleplay, and you're willing to pay a subscription.
